Our mission is to provide an emergency response to the nutritional needs of Orphans in crisis throughout the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo as a key strategy to recruit and encourage kids from poor economic backgrounds for education. We are dedicated to alleviating hunger to Orphans while providing the community with resource counseling to help move them towards independence. Our goal is to provide a proactive, non-traditional approach to food assistance that will eventually lead to self-reliance for individuals in need of services and join Orphans in need for education.
OUR PROJECTS 01. Pre-Primary Education
Pre-primary education is a stepping stone for young Orphans to get accustomed to school environment. In many communities, these help to get children into the formal education system. Usually the teachers follow up to make sure that children graduate to local schools. In these centers the children are provided with a loving & nurturing environment. They learn language & some math. Also they play games & learn poems, songs, dance and stories. Many of such centers also provide meals. The teachers are well trained and come from the community. The children are of the age group 2-9 years typically.
02. Children Homes
Congo Mission in Action supports the running costs of several homes under which number of children we support live in families. Typically the support provided covers the costs of daily and living expenses and schooling for the Orphans and children from poor socio-economic backgrounds. We don’t build Orphanages, but encourage families from the community to live with Orphans for the better socio-life within a family environment.
03. Alternative education schools
Congo Mission in Action works with many schools and existing orphanages in Africa that attempt to provide quality holistic education to children from poor economic backgrounds including Orphans on the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo through involving communities to facilitate the education of Orphans and kids from poor socio-economic backgrounds. These schools come under a special category called ‘Alternative Education schools’ because they seek to explore different alternatives in education. Such schools continue to encourage the spirit of inquiry in a child and help them make their choices based on nurturing the child’s interest and learning. A lot of importance is given to the child’s psychology at an early age so that they loose the psychological fears or complexes they may have towards learning. This especially, encourages Orphans to think independently and become more responsible. Most of these schools are engaged in creating and using innovative teaching methodologies that ensure rote learning does not happen.
As an example – some schools have developed excellent language teaching methodologies. Others may use creative games and experiments to explain difficult concepts in Math or Professional Skills, while other schools have changed the class room structure to encourage better children and teacher’s interaction. Such creativity is typically missing in the conventional education stream practiced by majority of schools in the DR-Congo. Alternative education schools are looking to be founded by persons with a strong interest in what education means, and what it should provide. Since the established patterns in the conventional education system in the DR-Congo are missing many aspects of what education is really about – alternative education schools try to address these inadequacies.
